Barns and stonewalls are back in my work. Some friends and collectors requested new barn and stonewall paintings. I have always enjoyed painting barn and stone wall images and thought why not? I grew up on a farm in Indiana and spent time in our barns, tending to the animals, playing in the hay loft and hiding out from my parents! I once slept in the stall with Blackfoot, my western cowpony. He was my best friend at the time. I also slept once with a sow, a mother pig who had her babies in there with us.
Over the last 25 years, I grew attached to a barn visible from Middle Road in Chilmark on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. The Keith Farm barn was central to my work for years. I also painted images of the barns from the Indiana farm as well. Now many different barn images show up in my work.
I also paint pure abstract paintings. Whether abstract or more recognizable imagery, color is my keel. Color wakes me up and calms me down. Color runs through my veins.
I want spaces to be clean and simple and to also create mystery and complexity. The many layers of paint provide depth and meaning. I apply paint, sand some areas, apply more paint and maybe sand again. Sanding reveals the layers of color underneath that gives the work transparency in contrast to the opacity of the un-sanded areas.
My hope is that the viewers are visually stimulated and that my paintings continue to offer up new insights each time they view them.
